High-pressure die casting vs. plastic injecting moulding
When is high-pressure die casting more interesting than plastic injection moulding?
The choice of basic materials is one of the decisive factors in the design process. Not only in terms of functional possibilities, but also for the lifespan of the project. Especially in the electronics sector e.g., where the housing, mounting parts and connectors often determine the final result. Or for cooling blocks, where a specific, optimised design can ensure maximal heat dissipation.
1. Aluminium and zamak: ideal for extreme conditions
Sun? Extreme weather conditions? Windblown sand? Or even shocks or vandalism? In many cases, a component has to withstand some very challenging circumstances.
A high-pressure die casting component in aluminium or zamak provides the required physical strength. Because high-pressure die casting parts can (literally) take a beating. Even after prolonged exposure to harsh conditions, these materials retain their shape and strength. Without cracks, fissures or creep.
This is what ensures that this charging station, with its sturdy aluminium housing, remains in perfect shape, even after long-term use in public car parks.

2. A need for cooling or electromagnetic shielding?
A housing that protects the built-in electronic components, and at the same time dissipates the heat produced internally and shields the electronics from electromagnetic radiation? No problem. Aluminium and zamak alloys are good thermal conductors and provide natural shielding against electromagnetic radiation. An additional protective layer is not necessary.
In the design phase, you can easily add cooling ribs or cooling channels for natural ventilation and efficient heat dissipation. A housing of a traffic camera can also immediately become an efficient cooling block, thanks to its design and the material used.
3. Aluminium and zamak, for a high-quality look & feel
Both materials are heavier than plastics. And due to their good thermal conductivity characteristics, they feel cool to touch. The combination of these properties creates an aura of luxury and robustness. An aluminium housing emphasizes the quality and durability of any appliance, both in domestic and in industrial applications. And push buttons or knobs in zamak remain beautiful and functional for years, no matter how often they are used.
High pressure diecast parts have an excellent surface finish and require only minimal post-processing. Or if you are looking for a specific surface treatment, Pedeo has experience to offer them. These not only provide the perfect aesthetic finish, they also provide an additional protective layer to the part.
